Summer Lecture Series 2008

Grief Seminar
Wednesday: July 9th • 10:00-11:30am
Monday: August 18th • 1:00-2:30pm

Cheryl Nick, RN
Professional Life Coach
Certified Grief Recovery Specialist

Everyone, at some point in life is affected by grief. Whether it is due to the death of a loved one, divorce or romantic breakup, loss of a pet, job loss, retirement, or relocation from our roots, loss creates change which we are not always prepared to handle. Our society has taught us how to acquire things, but not what to do when we experience loss.

This presentation discusses the basics of grief and loss and how it affects us. Attendees will learn tips on what to do when loss occurs, what to do and say when someone dear to us has loss in their life, and how to live life to its fullest while recovering from loss.

NEW LITERARY SALON

TO BEGIN OCTOBER 8 AT DESERT FOOTHILLS LIBRARY

Welcome to the Literary Salon, a lively conversation sponsored by the Arizona Authors' Association at the Desert Foothills Library. The Salon is a monthly conversational milieu focusing on ideas and all forms of literary and artistic endeavor, a time and place in which interesting people share stimulating ideas on a variety of topics.

Not a book club, workshop, class or support group, the Salon instead offers a fresh
alternative -- that increasingly rare commodity, good conversation respecting and inclusive of the insights of all.

The first Salon is scheduled for October 8, 2008. We will meet monthly from 10:30 a.m. to Noon, the second Wednesday of each month at the Desert Foothills Library.

The Library provides a comfortable space and coffee and Arizona Authors Association members offer refreshments. Salon hosts are Melanie Lee, a journalist and founder of
Sojourns Writing Workshops, and Louis Michalski, an anthropologist and adjunct instructor at two Arizona universities.

October's Topic for discussion is "Animals in Literature". Read a book, essay, poem, short story, or whatever strikes the fancy - and come prepared to tell us how it moved you, perhaps inspired you, disgusted you, provoked you… Was what you encountered life-changing? Strange? Endearing? Helpful to your own writing efforts? Enlightening philosophically, spiritually, socially... or what?

Some timeless examples come to mind: Jack London's "The Call of the Wild". How are animals portrayed as symbols of intuition? How did dogs come to be called man's best friend? Do elephants cry? The enduring fascination of fables featuring the
wisdom of animals (grasshopper and ant). Poetry (Pablo Neruda's Ode series: tuna, dog, etc.).Wonder if the advent of The Humane Society influenced the literature of the day, or vice versa? How about animals as metaphors for human experience and symbolic of human characteristics? Not to even mention animals in both classical and popular art and music ("Peter and the Wolf", Rousseau's jungle scenes...). Well, you get the idea. And we'll be taking it all in, discussing, commenting, enjoying each other's insights and delighting in this lively literary excursion. See you October 8!
